Thor's Hammer is a triangle shaped aspect pattern formed by two planets or points on a chart that are square one another, with both of these planets/points making a sesquisquare aspect (135 degrees) to a third planet or point. The focal planet/point is the sensitive point and will express itself through the other two.

You must understand the meaning of the three planets involved to determine the true meaning of the Thor's Hammer since they will determine the nuances of the aspect. Often people are somewhat difficult with this placement because it is a dynamic and sometimes volatile aspect. The adult may buck the system and also have feelings of stress. Also these may not be the easiest people to live with but they may be worth it.

The best definition of Thor's Hammer I have read is "a gift from God but only for the brave." That pretty much sums it up. A prime example of Thor's Hammer at work are three principal persons who worked at the French publication Charlie Hebdo, Stephane Charbonnier, Jean Cabu and Georges Wolinski. They were killed in the terrorist attack on Charlie Hebdo January, 7, 2015, Paris France, 11 :30 A.M. Their charts are included with this article. The two Terrorists, CherifKouachi and Said Kouachi identified themselves as Al-Qaeda which took responsibility for the attack.

Jean Cabu and Georges Wolinski were a cartoonists, and Stephane Charbonnier was the editor of the publication. Charlie Hebdo was a satyrical publication that poked fun of just about everyone, politics, and religion in general which included Islam. Charlie Hebdo's cartoons of Muhammad were deemed offensive by radicals. All three of these men had a Thor's Hammer in their charts. Keep in mind that, at the time of the terrorist attack, Charlie Hebdo had already had its computers hacked and had been fire-bombed in the past. Charbonnier, Cabu and Wolinski (and the others at Charlie Hebdo) were quite aware of the possibility of future attacks. However, in the tradition of freedom of speech and the press, and true to their Thor's Hammers, these three men kept moving forward along with the other brave souls that were killed or wounded in the attack. Twelve were killed and eleven iajured.

Stephane Charbonnier ( editor) was born 8/21/1967 at 6:30 PM in Conflans Ste Honorin, France. His Sun and Mercury, and his Midheaven all point to Saturn- this is his Thor's Hammer. His Sun is in the seventh house in Leo (which is ruled by the Sun) so his partnerships with those at Hebdo are strong and he will be very public - out there for all to see. Mercury of course is his writing and communication. His Midheaven is Scorpio so one can understand his attitude and also pushing buttons in a psychological manner, and pointing to his Saturn in his second house of personal values (as well as money and possessions). Saturn is in Aries which is ruled by Mars in the ninth house so his values are based on higher consciousness and ideals, philosophy and religion which are brought into play with Saturn being hard work and obstacles (I guess being fire bombed would be an obstacle). The ninth house is also foreign places and matters. It was religious interpretation of Islam by a radical faction whose origins started in a foreign country that instigated the attack on Charlie Hebdo. Hard work and obstacles (Saturn being the focal point) is manifested in his Sun and Mercury in Leo energy and editing skills, and his Midheaven career and honors.

Jean Cabu (cartoonist) was born January 13, 1938 in Chalons sur Marne, France, at 9:20 PM. His Thor's Hammer includes the Moon, Neptune Rx, Ascendant and Jupiter. His Moon is in Gemini in his tenth house of career and honor, his Neptune is in the first house in Virgo conjunct the Ascendant and his Jupiter is in the fifth house in Aquarius (his house of creativity). Thus his Moon and Neptune/Ascendant point to his fifth house Jupiter. His Thor's Hammer is truly the definition of the aspect. His Moon is in the tenth house in Gemini suggesting a quick and active mind, and he has a lot of feeling brought into his thought patterns. The moon rules Cancer at which Pluto sits at 29 degrees Cancer in the eleventh house. He actually wants reform in his homeland by reaching many people through word and thought. At 29 degrees, it is difficult energy to harness. His Ascendant and Neptune are both Virgo which helps bring his vivid imagination to a concrete place where he may express it. His thoughts run wild. He is also very intuitive with his work. He knows what will push buttons. Both of these placements point to Jupiter in his fifth house of creativity. He has great opportunity in his creative endeavors and will be expansive in his work. Jupiter is in Aquarius which is ruled by Uranus sitting in his eighth house of psychology, etc. so he also uses psychological means in his cartoons to push buttons. Another facet of the eighth house is legacies and death. His legacy is his contribution to Charlie Hebdo for which he was assassinated. With the Neptune Rx and the eighth house connection, there is a suggestion that this was not his first rodeo - he had trouble in past lives for his creativity and ideals. This is his comfort zone and he is repeating patterns.

Georges Wolinski was born June 29, 1934, at 5:00 PM in Tunis, Tunisia. His Thor's Hammer is Mercury Rx/Pluto both at 23 Cancer in the eighth house, Asteroid Hidalgo at 22 Aries in the fifth house, pointing to Asteroid Astraea Rx at 7 Sagittarius in the first house. The asteroid Hidalgo represents both the priest and the revolutionary (I have found usually on the right side of the revolution), and sits in the house of creativity so Wolinski's cartoons are for reform based on higher philosophy and values, his Mercury (writing and communication) and Pluto (reform) both in Cancer suggest reform and power struggles based on his foundation and home, and these point toward Astraea which suggests morals, values, reasoning and good judgment. Well, good judgment may not have been writing for Charlie Hebdo and inciting radicals but it certainly did have to do with morals an values. One facet of the eighth house is death and Cancer ( within which two planets sit) sits naturally on the fourth house which is the end of matters so it appears his creativity, bravery and personal being (first house}, are included in end of matters and death. Also Astraea and Mercury are both Rx suggesting karmic conditions. Like Jean Cabu, he appears to have used his creativity and communication in the past, may well have been in trouble then, and the pattern is repeating itself.

All three mens' charts have a lot of other placements pointing to who they are and the careers they have chosen. My definition of the Thor's Hammer in each chart is brief but is to show the reader how this aspect works and how difficult it may be even while the people with the aspect are truly enjoying what they do and know the risks they are taking. After this horrible attack, various world leaders and somewhere around two million people attended a rally in Paris for unity. There were 3.7 million demonstrating throughout France People marched carrying signs saying, "Je suis Charlie." This translates to "My name is Charlie." This just shows what Thor's Hammer means for those who died, "a gift from God but only for the brave." The French will not give up any freedom (in this case speech and a free press) no matter what the cost and the Charlie Hebda attack brought the people out once again demonstrating for the rights they cherish. The next issue of the magazine was published by those who remained. According to Wikipedia this issue sold 7 .95 million copies in six languages as opposed to the usual 60,000 French only run of the publication.
