Robbie Robertson and Martin Scorsese The Cazimi Conjunction by Gayle Gaffner, Secretary NCGR-LA
I recently read an article by Alan Mayeda in Today’s Astrologer 2023, Volume 85 Number 8, published by the American Federation of Astrologers. He defined the Cazimi as an Arabian astronomical term, which is a conjunct aspect of the Sun and Venus, and there cannot be more than 17 minutes in the exact conjunction between the two. He defined this aspect as “the secret wealth aspect” in charts of exceptionally talented, successful, and extremely wealthy individuals although in “some cases wealth depends on if there are major planetary configurations.” In the article, he stated that screenwriter and director Martin Scorsese has this aspect with his Sun at 24 Scorpio 12 and his Venus at 24 Scorpio 22. This article made me think of one of my favorite movies of all time - The Last Waltz, which was The Band’s last concert, and the film of this concert was directed by Martin. Robbie Robertson worked with Martin in post-production as well. This movie is considered one of the greatest rock films of all time. Robbie had so much charisma in this film that he outshined the other members of The Band a bit (at least in my mind). Levon Helm did have the best voice, though. Robbie wrote such songs as The Weight, Broken Arrow, Up On Cripple Creek, Somewhere Down the Crazy River, The Night They Drove Old Dixie Down,” and many more.
Robbie, songwriter, guitarist, singer, and a principal “driving force” of The Band, passed away on Wednesday, August 9, 2023. There was obviously a connection that Martin felt with Robbie. After Martin directed The Last Waltz, Robbie went on to score movies for Martin and others, as well as make his own music. He also did a bit of acting.
I have put Robbie’s chart in synastry with Martin’s chart to see how Martin’s Cazimi may have influenced Robbie’s chart. Although Robbie was already rich, famous, and an established musician/songwriter his connection to Martin suggests a new turn in his musical career.
Martin’s Cazimi sits in Robbie’s 9th House of higher consciousness - a true esoteric and beneficial meeting of the minds. It is square Robbie’s Moon and Venus in Robbie’s 7th (partnership) House. Venus is the planet associated with music. Robbie’s Moon and Venus are in Leo which suggests he likes working with partners on projects that would put him in the spotlight. The 7th House Leo helps him rise to prominence working with others. In the beginning of his career he in effect partnered with his mentor Ronnie Hawkins in Hawkins’ band The Hawks. Hawkins was a mentor to other members of his band that would also break away with Robbie to form The Band. Robbie’s 7th House Moon and Venus in Leo is the showman working with his partners. The square of Martin’s Cazimi to Robbie’s 7th House Moon and Venus suggests there is hard work ahead and they may also work through creative differences; however, squares are what make us work hard and become who we want to be. This is a good working relationship.
The square of Martin’s Cazimi to Robbie’s 7th House planets is enhanced by Martin’s Ascendant, Chiron and North Node in Leo conjunct Robbie’s 7th House Moon, Chiron and Venus in Leo.
Martin’s Sun and Venus Cazimi is also trine Robbie’s Jupiter in his 6th House of work. This a great deal of opportunity for Robbie to expand his work and career. This is an easy working relationship despite the square which again suggests hard work. The trine creates an easiness between the two men even though they may have different ideas at times. Martin benefits from Robbie’s talent and Robbie benefits from Martin’s talent which is furthered by Martin’s Cazimi.
Interestingly, Martin’s Cazimi sit in his 4th House of home and foundation in his natal chart. Robbie’s Jupiter is in the sign of Cancer which naturally sits on the 4th House suggesting a type of familial familiarity between the two. Another strong Cazimi connection with Robbie.
Martin’s Cazimi is also conjunct (by a slightly wide orb) Robbie’s Midheaven again bringing more to the table career-wise, fame and fortune for Robbie. Although the Cazimi is personal to Martin, his personal wealth, fame, etc. did combine with Robbie’s talent and benefitted both. Robbie got to shine even more when working with Martin in th film industry and then with others in film as well.
